Teachers in Rhode Island currently maintain their certification by showing evidence of continuous professional development. Creating a personal PD plan is a unit-wide assignment in the School of Education for all student teachers. The steps below are designed to guide you through this process so that we can complete it efficiently.
Reflect on your teaching so far. Choose one area that you know you need to strengthen. Use this area to list 1-3 needs that might serve as

1.
Discipline
I am very weak in the way I discipline my students and would like to be able to set more clear rules and follow through with my consequences. This would foster a more smoothly run classroom.
By following through with my rules moreoften hopefully the students would conduct themselves in a better manner in the school also.

2.
NECAP
Not being from New England, I am extremely unfamiliar with the NECAP method of testing. After completing student teaching I am much more well versed in NECAP methodology, but would like to be able to help my students achieve in this high stakes testing environment as much as I can. Teaching 9th graders isn't usually based on a test that the students take 2 years later, but the NECAP is very spread out in science curriculum and I belive that starting early is a great policy.
The school will benefit from higher NECAP scores in many ways, the one tha tcomes to mind the most is in publicity. Community members want to be proud of the scores that students achieve on these types of tests, and increasing the scores in science is always a positive achievement. This can help with grants, school board meetings and an overall sense of achievement in the student body.

Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
I. Professional Development Goal
I believe as a professional I should promote a classroom with mutual respect between myself and students while also following through with the rules of the classroom. I hope to also create a learning environment that is both safe and successful. My goal is to follow through with 100% of my classroom rules. I want to be able to have a classroom where students want to learn and participate, but know the level of behavior that is tolerated and what is not.
Students will know what behavior is expected of them in order to complete each lesson successfully. Tasks will not only help on a day to day basis, but also it will carry across into the school. The consequences expected by the students would align with those of the school and eventually foster a cohesive environment. Once behavioral issues were dealt with, there will always be more room for learning. For example, when teachers are less worried about behavioral issues more advanced labs are available for the classes.

Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
This goal can definitely be reached by attending seminars on classroom management. As a member of Kappa Delta Pi, I am able to attend profession "webinars" online that help develop and reach professional goals set by teachers. Also, with the new method of teacher assessment there is room for improvement when addressing the flaws of each classroom. I believe that these will help enable me as a first year teacher to grow in a beneficial way for both me and my students. I think that attending professional development conferences are the best way to reach these goals for me. Also, by reaching out to other teachers in the school district and sharing ideas, the goals can be reached.
Becoming familiar with school policies is a great way to base any discipline plans while also being a reference for other students. For example, being well versed in the different types of detentions given for the variety of actions students usually take. I think that using methods found both inside the school and already implemented, and found outside of the school and proven to work, would be a great combination of instilling positive discipline in any classroom. Students and teachers should be able to feel comfortable in their classrooms, which is something that can definitely be helped along with a great method of discipline.
